My Writing Isn’t a Place to Sell Your Work
Please be polite
This is me calling out writers who are trying to sell me their books.
Not once, but twice another Medium writer has plugged their own writing as a comment on my posts. It is one thing to tell someone you like their work and then share something related, if you already have that kind of give and take relationship.
But on Medium, most of us know better than to one-up each other’s writing by shamelessly linking their published work for sale.
This is like setting up your own candy store INSIDE someone’s candy store. It just doesn’t work that way, especially without permission.
There are plenty of places to promote your writing. Amazon has it’s reviews, Twitter is perfect for your billboard. You can even write your OWN post about your book and try to sell it to your readers that way.
I just do not understand why someone would feel the need to first apologize, and then link it anyway. Sorry, but I…
This is an admission of guilt. You know you are doing something possibly wrong if you say you’re sorry first and then doing the thing.
If you or someone you love has done this in the past, you are totally forgiven. But from now on, please ask a writer if they would be interested in hearing about your book in a private message. Then respect their answer.
Here is my attempt at a polite boundary. Feel free to use it if this happens to you.
Thank you for your response. Please do not use comments on my work to sell your own work. I think that breaks some Medium etiquette norms.
I have not heard back from the salesperson yet.
